A phone interview is the easiest interview to get live AI help in. Nobody sees your screen, nobody sees your eyes, and there is no video to keep steady. All you need is a phone interview AI assistant that can hear the interviewer and a setup that lets it.
This guide shows how to set that up, step by step, for a recruiter phone screen, a hiring manager call, or a video call where you keep the camera off.
Last updated: October 9, 2026.
Key takeaways:
- A phone interview AI assistant listens to the interviewer, detects the question, and shows you a suggested answer while the call is still going.
- InterviewMan listens through the microphone of the device it runs on, so the interviewer's voice must be audible in the room.
- Use two devices: the call on one, on speaker, and the app on the other, right next to it.
- Don't take the call on the same phone that runs the app. During a call, the phone keeps the microphone for the call.
- Phone screens move fast. Read the first line of the answer, then speak in your own words.
Where this comes from: InterviewMan is our own product. The setup below is the one our support team sends to users. The short version is on our help page, How to set up your call so InterviewMan hears the interviewer.
Why phone interviews are the easiest case for AI help
Video interviews come with problems that phone calls simply don't have:
- No screen sharing. Nobody asks you to share your desktop, so there is nothing to hide.
- No eye contact to fake. You can look at your notes, your phone or the ceiling. The interviewer only hears you.
- Short, predictable questions. Recruiter screens follow a script: "Tell me about yourself," "Why are you leaving?", "What are your salary expectations?", "Walk me through your last project."
The only hard part is audio. The assistant has to hear the interviewer clearly, every time.

Download InterviewManWhat you need
- The phone or laptop you take the call on. This is the calling device.
- A second device running InterviewMan. A laptop, a Mac, a Windows PC, or another phone. Get it from the download page.
- A quiet room. The app listens to the room, so less background noise means cleaner questions.
- No headphones for the call.
Setup 1: Call on your phone, AI on your laptop
This is the most natural setup for a classic phone screen:
- Open InterviewMan on your laptop and sign in.
- Put your phone on speaker when the recruiter calls.
- Place the phone next to the laptop, speaker facing up, about an arm's length away or closer.
- Press Start in InterviewMan. On desktop you can also press ⌘ + L on Mac or Ctrl + L on Windows (see keyboard shortcuts).
- Read answers on the laptop while you talk into the phone.
On a laptop, only one app can use the microphone at a time on many systems, so close other apps that use the mic before the call.
Setup 2: Call on your laptop, AI on your phone
This fits a video call (Zoom, Google Meet, Microsoft Teams) where you keep your camera off, or any call you take on your computer:
- Join the call on your laptop and make sure the sound plays through the laptop speakers, not headphones.
- Open InterviewMan on your phone and allow microphone access when asked.
- Place the phone next to the laptop, with nothing covering its microphone.
- Press Start in the app before the first question.
- Glance at your phone for the suggested answer.
If your camera is on, put the phone just below the webcam, so a quick glance looks like you are looking at the screen.
The one setup that does not work
Taking the phone interview on the same phone that runs the app. While a phone call, FaceTime or app call is active, the phone keeps the microphone for that call. InterviewMan can't listen until the call ends.
Wearing headphones or AirPods. The interviewer's voice goes into your ears, not into the room, so the app hears nothing, or only hears you.
If either sounds like your situation, switch to one of the two setups above.
Test your setup in two minutes
Do this the day before, and again just before the call:
- Set the devices up exactly as you will use them.
- On the calling device, play a YouTube interview simulator video out loud, or type a question into Google Translate and press the speaker button.
- Press Start in InterviewMan.
- Check that the question appears and an answer follows.
If nothing appears, turn the volume up, move the devices closer, and check the app's microphone permission. The full checklist is in our guide to setting up an AI that listens to interview questions and answers.
How to use the answers on a phone interview without sounding like you're reading
Getting an answer on screen is half the job. Saying it naturally is the other half.
- Buy two seconds. "Good question, let me think about the best example" sounds normal on a phone screen and covers the time the answer takes to appear.
- Read the first line, then talk. Use the first sentence as your starting point and finish in your own words. Reading a full paragraph word for word sounds flat on the phone.
- Keep answers short. Recruiter screens are fast. Pick a shorter answer length in the app's answer settings, or add an extra instruction like "Keep answers to three sentences" (see custom settings).
- Add your resume first. Answers to "Tell me about yourself" and "Walk me through your experience" are far better when the app knows your real background.
- Pick the right language. If the interview is not in English, set the interview language before the call. See supported languages.
Frequently asked questions
What is a phone interview AI assistant?
It is an app that listens to a phone or video interview, turns the interviewer's speech into text, detects each question, and shows you a suggested answer on screen while the call is still going. InterviewMan is one example.
Can I use an AI assistant on the same phone I take the interview call on?
No. While a call is active, the phone keeps the microphone for that call, so the app can't listen. Take the call on one device and run the AI on another, placed next to it with the call on speaker.
Can I wear headphones during a phone interview with an AI assistant?
Not with InterviewMan. It listens through its device's microphone, so the interviewer's voice must play out loud in the room. With headphones, the app hears nothing, or only your voice.
Does it work for video calls with the camera off?
Yes. Treat it like a phone call: join on your laptop with sound on speaker, and run InterviewMan on your phone next to it. The meeting app does not matter, because the app listens to the room, not to Zoom, Meet or Teams.
Will the recruiter know I am using AI on a phone interview?
The app does not join the call, so nothing appears on the recruiter's side. What a recruiter can notice is long silences or a reading voice. Keep answers short and speak them in your own words.
How do I test my setup before the call?
Play a YouTube interview simulator or use Google Translate's speak button out loud next to the app, then press Start. If the question shows up and an answer follows, you are ready.
