Most AI interview copilots only show English demos. So we asked InterviewMan a German interview question and recorded what happened. InterviewMan is our own tool, so read this as a vendor demo, not an independent test.
The question was "Erzählen Sie mir etwas über sich", the German version of "tell me about yourself". For this recording a synthetic German voice spoke the question through the Mac's speakers. The app heard it through the microphone, transcribed it live, recognized it as a question, and streamed an answer in German into its private window while the audio was still playing. That is exactly the path a real video call takes, except that there the interviewer is the one speaking. The image below shows it.

How the language settings work
InterviewMan has two separate language settings, and they control different parts of the pipeline.
- Interview language is the language the interviewer speaks. It controls audio transcription and question detection.
- Answer language is the language the suggested answer is written in. It controls answer generation only.
The two can match or differ. A German interview with German answers is the normal setup for a job in Germany. An English interview with German suggestions can make sense if you read faster in your native language and then speak English yourself.
The app supports more than 40 languages, including German (de) and German for Switzerland (de-CH). The full list is on the supported languages help page. Both settings are chosen during onboarding and can be changed later in the app settings.
What the German demo shows
The recording shows three things in order.
- The transcription appears at the bottom while the voice is still speaking. The question "Erzählen Sie mir etwas über sich" is then recognized as a question and shown at the top of the window.
- A first-person answer streams in German inside the app's private window, word by word, instead of appearing all at once after a pause.
- The answer has a structure: current role, relevant experience, why this position. That is the shape a good "tell me about yourself" answer usually takes.
The answer is a draft, not a script. It gives you a structure in the first second so you are not searching for an opening. Reading it word for word sounds like reading, and interviewers hear the difference. Paraphrase the first sentence, use the order of the points, keep looking at the camera.
The answer is also written German, not English run through a translator. Word order and the formal "Sie" register come from generating the answer in German from the start.
A second example: a multiple-choice question
Not every question in a hiring process is open-ended. Technical screens and online tests use multiple-choice questions. So we made a second recording in the same session, with the same settings and the same web client:
Second screen recording, same session, same settings. The question with four options was again read aloud by the synthetic voice; at the bottom you can watch the transcription grow over about ten seconds before the question is detected and answered.
The question, in German, was "Which statement about HTTP status codes is correct? A) 301 means Not Found. B) 404 means Not Found. C) 500 means OK. D) 200 means Redirect." The app gives the correct letter first (B), then a one-sentence reason, then what the other codes mean. Note the wait: with a long question, question detection holds until the sentence is finished before the answer starts.
That is the format that matters for this kind of question: the letter first so you can answer at once, the reason second so you can explain why.
Why this matters for non-English interviews
Generating an answer in a given language is the easy part. The hard part is transcribing the interviewer's speech in their language, live, with low delay. Every live copilot runs the same five stages: audio capture, live transcription, question detection, answer generation, streaming display. Vendors have optimized English transcription for years. For German, the questions are different:
- Does the transcription handle compound nouns and long sentences?
- Does question detection wait for the end of a German sentence, where the verb often comes last, before deciding the question is complete?
- Does the answer come back in the interview language by default, or does it fall back to English?
That last point is why the two settings are separate. If a tool has only one language setting, one of these two jobs is being guessed.
Run one test session with the free minutes before any real German interview. Have someone ask a question in German and check how fast the suggestion appears and whether the transcript is accurate. That tells you more than any demo, including ours.
Screen-share visibility and honest limits
The desktop app is invisible to screen sharing in Zoom, Microsoft Teams, and Google Meet. You can share your whole screen and the interviewer will not see the answer window. The undetectability help page explains how that works.

The limits are just as important as the features:
- No hidden network traffic. The app talks to servers like any other program, and network monitoring can see that.
- The app does not type or submit anything for you. It shows text. What you do with it is your decision.
- It does not run code. Coding questions get a suggestion; nothing executes in your editor.
- On a company laptop with device management software (tools an IT department uses to monitor a computer), that software sees what it sees. Invisibility applies to screen sharing, not to employer monitoring tools.
- In-person interviews are not the use case. The app needs the call audio on a computer.
Whether you should use it at all depends on the employer. There is no German law against using an AI aid in an interview, but company rules differ: Amazon forbids AI help in hiring, Anthropic forbids it in live interviews, and Meta and Shopify explicitly allow it in some rounds. FAQ
Does it work with Swiss German or Austrian German?
German for Switzerland (de-CH) is its own interview language option and covers Swiss Standard German. Austrian German runs through the German (de) setting. Strong spoken dialect can lower transcription accuracy, as with any speech recognition, so test with the free minutes first.
Can the answer be in German while the interview is in English?
Yes. Set interview language to English and answer language to German. Transcription then works on English speech, and the suggestion is written in German.
Does the interviewer hear anything?
No. The app produces no sound and does not speak. It shows text on your screen or on your second device. The interviewer hears only you.
Can I switch the answer language in the middle of an interview?
Language settings are set during onboarding and changed in the app settings. Decide both before the call. If you expect the interview to switch between German and English, run a test session first to see which combination works best for you.
