Microsoft Software Engineer Interview Guide 2026
Microsoft system design round में बैठा चेहरा लाल हो रहा था क्योंकि interviewer GDPR deletion flows और data residency पूछ रहा था और मैंने URL shorteners prep किए थे। वो moment था जब realize हुआ सारी interview prep Google based थी और Google Microsoft जैसा बिल्कुल नहीं है। buddy Derek हफ्तों से बताने की कोशिश कर रहा था और मैं बस सिर हिलाता था और idiot की तरह leetcode grind करता रहता।
यहां बताता हूं क्या हुआ। Google में interviewers random लोग हैं random teams से shared bank of problems से pull करते हैं। कोई resume नहीं जानता, कोई care नहीं करता किस team पर apply किया। Microsoft उल्टा है, सामने बैठे लोग literally उसी team पर काम करते हैं जिसपर तुम join करोगे। उन्हें codebase पता है, पिछले sprint के bugs पता हैं, architecture decisions जिन पर standups में argue कर रहे हैं। एक interviewer ने design question पूछा एक ऐसी problem पर जो उसकी team उसी quarter actively solve करने की कोशिश कर रही थी। Derek ने बोला था "team study करो generic YouTube stuff नहीं" और मैंने उड़ा दिया।
Phone screen honestly पूरे experience का सबसे अच्छा part था lol। Choice दी, live coding या async Codility quiz। Live चुना। दो mediums, string manipulation और binary tree traversal, करीब बीस-बीस मिनट। Interviewer actually बात करता रहा code करते हुए जो obvious लगता है लेकिन Google screen के बाद जहां आदमी पैंतालीस मिनट silence में बैठा surreal लगा। Tree problem में off-by-one था और बस बोला "hey might want to look at that line again" और fix कर दिया। आगे बढ़ गए। Compare करो Google से जहां silence में बैठे wonder करो already fail हो गए या नहीं।
Trees। तीन coding rounds में से दो में tree questions आए और Derek ने बाद में बताया exact same ratio उसका था। January 2026 में एक और दोस्त, same बात। Traversals, path sums, subtree checks, serialization। Google के लिए prep करते हुए हर topic पर बराबर time लगाया और Microsoft के लिए वो wrong approach है। दोबारा करना होता तो आधा prep time सिर्फ trees पर लगाता और कुछ नहीं जब तक automatic न हो जाएं।
System design सबसे बुरा round था by far। GDPR और data residency disaster तो बताया लेकिन पूरी story worse है। हर YouTube prep channel same चार designs cover करता है और चारों study कर चुका था और confident feel हो रहा था। फिर interviewer audit logging requirements, encryption at rest obligations, regions में data sovereignty rules बोलने लगा। इसमें से कोई भी किसी video में नहीं था जो देखी। Microsoft compliance और regulatory stuff को Google या Meta से कहीं ज़्यादा care करता है और अगर prep नहीं किया तो मेरे जैसे हो जाओगे, कुछ sensible बोलने के लिए scramble करते जबकि clock खत्म हो रहा हो।
Domain round भी था। मेरे लिए cloud infra, caching at scale, eventual vs strong consistency, एक specific distributed failure case। ये वो round है जिसके बारे में Derek ने सबसे ज़्यादा warn करने की कोशिश की क्योंकि questions सीधे team के real work से आते हैं। Team Azure है तो Azure study करो। Behavioral पंद्रह मिनट था, तीन stories, किसी ने किसी को blame नहीं किया। वो ठीक था।
पूरे दिन InterviewMan चलाया और honestly system design round बचा लिया। Onsite से पहले mocks में use कर चुका था और real round में audit logging और data residency discussion angles की तरफ nudge किया, जिन topics पर zero prep थी और अपने आप सोच कर लाता नहीं। Coding rounds में problem पूरी पढ़ने से पहले tree structures flag कर दिए तो गलत approaches पर time बर्बाद नहीं किया। Domain round में real time transcript ने question details पकड़ लिए जो stress में ठीक से सुन नहीं पाया। Teams और Codility दोनों के साथ काम करता है जो Microsoft सब के लिए use करता है। Dock, process list, दोनों पर screen recordings check किया, कुछ नहीं दिखा। बारह रुपये महीना annual, 20 से ज़्यादा stealth features, 57,000 users। Interview Coder पहले देखा लेकिन दो सौ निन्यानवे महीना सिर्फ coding rounds के लिए, पांच round Microsoft onsite के लिए useless। Final Round इक्यासी पर session caps और पांच consecutive rounds में पूरे समय चलाना था।
अगर Derek ये लिख रहा होता तो बस तीन बातें बोलता। Trees grind करो जब तक path sums और traversals और subtree checks muscle memory न हो जाएं। System design में compliance add करो क्योंकि audit logs और GDPR और data residency आएंगे। और actual team research करो अंदर जाने से पहले क्योंकि सामने बैठे लोग वही हैं जिनके बगल में हर दिन बैठोगे और वो अपनी problems पूछने वाले हैं कोई textbook question नहीं जो online मिला lol
