Overview

तो पिछली fall में first rounds में 0 for 11 रहा और सब कुछ spreadsheet में लिख कर रखा क्योंकि buddy ने बोला अगर numbers लिख कर नहीं रखते तो बस guess कर रहे हो। गलत नहीं था। तीन cycles और बहुत सारे failed screens के बाद February तक 4 offers आए, जिसमें एक series B पर $115k base। फ़र्क ज़्यादा study करने से नहीं आया। अलग तरीके से study करने और call शुरू होने पर सही setup होने से आया।

यहां बताता हूं cycle one और cycle three के बीच क्या बदला। अगर interview preparation October वाले मेरे जैसी दिखती है, तो कुछ बातें कुछ महीनों की same mistakes बचा सकती हैं।

Random Grinding बंद करो

पहला cycle तीन हफ्ते LeetCode mediums grind करने में गया ये check करने से पहले कि target companies actually अपने loops में क्या पूछती हैं। तीन में से दो algorithmic coding assessments चलाती ही नहीं थीं। एक ने take-home दिया। दूसरी ने system design और फिर hiring manager call। करीब 60 घंटे ऐसी problems पर बर्बाद किए जो कोई पूछने वाला नहीं था और realize तब हुआ जब interview में बैठा सोच रहा था API design क्यों पूछ रहे हैं जबकि तीन हफ्ते dynamic programming पर लगाए।

Cycle two में हर company पर 30 मिनट Glassdoor interview pages और Blind threads और Reddit posts देखने में लगाने लगा उन लोगों से जो same loop recently गुज़रे। एक target company behavioral rounds को coding rounds के बराबर weight देती थी। अगर ये study शुरू करने से पहले पता होता तो उन तीन हफ्तों में से दो STAR stories rehearse करने में लगाता mediums grind करने की बजाय। 30 मिनट की company research ने करीब 20 घंटे गलत direction study बचा दी। First-round pass rate 27% से 58% गई और targeted research सबसे बड़ी वजह थी।

Stories ज़ोर से बोल कर Rehearse करो

Cycle one में STAR stories लिख रखी थीं। कभी ज़ोर से नहीं बोलीं। पहली बार call पर deliver करने की कोशिश की तो PM के साथ feature rollback पर push back की story के बीच में thread खो दिया। हर जगह filler words। Ending trail off हो गई। Interviewer ने follow-up पूछा और कुछ नहीं था।

Cycle two में phone पर हर story बोल कर record की और playback सुना। बुरा लगा। लेकिन playback ने rambling और weak endings और ums पकड़ लिए जो बोलते वक़्त सुनाई नहीं देते। Real round में use करने से पहले अपनी 8 stories में से हर एक तीन बार ज़ोर से rehearse की। दिमाग में version ठीक लगता है। Camera पर मुंह से निकला version बिल्कुल अलग story लगती है और तब तक पता नहीं चलेगा जब तक recording नहीं सुनो।

Behavioral pass rate cycle one में 0 for 3 से cycle three में 5 for 7 हो गई। Same work experience। बस stories बोलना शुरू किया doc से पढ़ने की बजाय।

Pattern-Based Coding

Cycle two में 50 problems किए। 300 नहीं। Sliding window, two pointers, BFS/DFS, DP templates। लिख कर रखा कौन सी problem कौन सा pattern use करती है और हर कुछ दिन weak वालों पर वापस जाता। Coding pass rate 25% से 55% के ऊपर गई और बस एक change था random grind बंद करना और patterns को problem types से match करना शुरू करना। नहीं लगता 300 problems 50 सही problems से ज़्यादा help करतीं।

System design अलग किया। Textbooks से load balancer diagrams याद करना बंद किया और real systems कैसे काम करते हैं वो पढ़ना शुरू किया। Netflix video कैसे deliver करता है। Uber drivers कैसे match करता है। अब paper पर design draw करता हूं क्योंकि whiteboard round paper या drawing tool पर होता है और paper पर सोचना doc में type करने जैसा नहीं है। मेरे तीन में से दो offers system design rounds वाले loops से आए और मुझे पक्का लगता है वो अच्छे गए क्योंकि हफ्तों से paper पर चीज़ें draw कर रहा था।

Live Call के लिए एक Tool

दुनिया की सारी interview preparation call तक ला देती है। Call वो है जहां cycle one धराशायी हुआ।

October phone screen से एक रात पहले exactly वो problem का variation solve किया जो पूछी। Approach पता था। Interviewer ने पूछा और brain blank। Camera पर चालीस seconds कुछ नहीं जबकि वो wait कर रही थी। Answer पता था। Pressure में camera पर reach नहीं कर पाया। ये studying problem नहीं था। ज़्यादा LeetCode performance problem fix नहीं करने वाला था।

Cycle two में InterviewMan चलाना शुरू किया $12 महीना annual। Desktop overlay, mic से सुनता है, करीब 2 से 3 seconds में direction screen पर दिखाता है। Material जानना, reasoning explain करना, conversation खुद carry करना -- सब मुझे ही करना था। बस सबसे बुरे moments में lock up होने से बचाया। 57,000 users। 257 reviews से 4.8 stars। 8 interviews में चलाया और 6 में आगे बढ़ा।

Roommate ने real call से पहले Zoom पर दो mocks किए। Overlay कहीं दिखा ही नहीं उसकी screen पर। 20 से ज़्यादा stealth features। 0 for 11 जाने के बाद बाकी सब के ऊपर detection risk add करने वाला नहीं था lol।

Mocks और Final Week

किसी भी first-round screen से पहले दो mocks। एक exactly उसी platform पर जो interview use करता है। CoderPad पर code करना है तो CoderPad पर mock करो। Zoom पर call है तो Zoom पर mock करो। Interview से एक रात पहले study बंद करो। Sleep एक और problem से ज़्यादा matter करती है। सुबह camera, mic, internet, screen share permissions, और जो कुछ चलाने का plan हो सब check करो।

Conclusion

Interview preparation तीन चीज़ें बदलने के बाद काम की: random grinding की बजाय per company targeted study, stories सिर्फ लिखने की बजाय ज़ोर से rehearse, और live call के लिए $12 महीने का tool ताकि camera पर blank होना बंद हो। ये changes करने से पहले 0 for 11 और बाद में 4 for 26। Changes complicated नहीं थे। बस पहले 11 बार fail होना पड़ा उन्हें करने से पहले।
